What you're looking at are the bent knees on the left and right, the bum on the bottom, and dead center pointing straight north is his little member. That's right, we're having a BOY! We couldn't be more excited. As a father-to-be I was also excited because the way he was sitting was his first act of obedience. Leading up to the visit I asked our little man that he please be spread eagle so there's no question what he was. Let me tell you he did not disappoint. When the tech looked at the picture she just said "there's no question what that is." That's my boy!
With the gender out of the way I did want to say that we were so grateful when the doctor said that everything was perfectly healthy. But I'm not going to lie to you, I found myself more often than not just having to take the doctor's word for it. The baby is healthy. I believe you. The baby's head is the right size. I believe you. His lips have formed correctly. I believe you. The baby is approximately 13 ounces. Again, I believe you. She could have told me anything and I would have had to believe her. Locating the kidneys she was talking about was like one of those emails your grandma sends you where they give you a picture of the forest and tell you to stare at it until you find Jesus in the trees. Look I don't doubt He's in the trees but all I'm seeing are trees. Similarly, thank you good doctor but I was looking at an entirely different white spot so if you tell me that other white spot is a kidney, it's a kidney.
Here are a couple pictures that we could definitely make out what was there.

This is a picture of one of his arms and a hand. I was amazed that you can see both bones in the lower arm and that the little hand is in a fist. He's going to be a strong one!
This picture is a 3-D picture of the baby's profile. It's a little harder to see but his head is in the left side of the frame looking toward the center. You can see the top of his head, eye, nose, lips, and chin. They like to get a front shot but apparently the baby was quite comfortable right up against the placenta which made it difficult to get a front shot (again taking the doctors word for it). I'm convinced that it's because the little man is an eater and the umbilical cord alone just isn't enough. He wanted to tap directly into the food source. Turns out I was wrong because while he started the visit breach and in that position, he ended the visit having rotated completely with his head down. He's an active little one!
I'd better wrap this up but I just wanted to say that we are so grateful for a healthy growing baby. Aside from marrying Allice this was one of the most joyous experiences of my life. Seeing our baby for the first time, watching him yawn, and being able to call him a him and not it have made this all so real. I left knowing that this little baby is ours! We are so excited for October to get here.
